Favourite Drifting Grows Confidence in Chasing Pack
As we approached Cheltenham, the runaway favourite for this race was Altior, who was cut to 8/11 at one stage. The news that he was found lame the weekend before the race pushed out his odds, but he’s still set to run. That sees him enter as the favourite at 5/4 with Betfred, but now there seems to be some doubt about the favourite going in to this race. Could we see a challenge?
Many Expecting a Push From Mullins
Min is one who is fancied to make a push, but that was back when there was doubt that Douvan would be Willie Mullins’ main contender here. However, they’ve confirmed that the second favourite will run, leaving Douvan priced up at 11/4 with Ladbrokes, slotting in as second favourite.
We expect that price to drop as more flock towards him, as he’s got the required quality to take this race. The fact that the eight-year-old was 2/9 favourite for this race 12 months ago tells you all you need to know about his quality. We expect him to make up for a poor run at this race last year, and putting him back in to contention for the Queen Mother Chase means that Mullins’ is pushing to make up for last year. While some are focusing on Min, we say follow the value in Douvan’s price.
Watch the Returning Champion
While the drama at the top of the betting heightens expectations ahead of this race, that’s given us a boost towards the middle of the pack. The top three are seen as such great options that Special Tiara has drifted out to fifth favourite, with a huge price of 28/1 with bet365. That price feels a little too big for the horse who triumphed in this race just 12 months ago.
While he was only in front after a mistake from our other selection – Douvan – it was a glimpse at what Special Tiara is capable of. While this isn’t a vintage year for the Henry de Bromhead trained 11-year-old, we think he has what it takes to push towards the top of the field here. We certainly think there’s value in going with him as an each way pick at current odds, so we’re backing him for a solid display.
