Arsenal v Chelsea Tips and Betting Offers, Community Shield, 6th August 2017
Can Chelsea make up for their FA Cup final defeat with a victory over Arsenal on Sunday? The pair meet at Wembley in the season curtain raiser this weekend following a clash on foreign soil over the summer. The Blues claimed a 3-0 win over the Gunners during preseason, but that’s expected to count for little when these two clash under the arch once again. With both sides having something to prove after the end to last season, expect this to be a competitive encounter.
Chelsea have been priced up as favourites at 23/20 with BetVictor, while Arsenal are 11/5 with Ladbrokes to claim a win here. The draw can be backed at 5/2 with Bet365. Just how will these two start the new season? Arsenal need to improve after their fifth placed finish, while the Blues will want to make up for their cup final loss.
This match should bring back memories for the Blues, as they faced Arsenal after winning the title in 2015. A heavy defeat two years ago started their worst season in the Abramovich era, one which Antonio Conte says he’s desperate to avoid repeating. Their title defence fell apart early on, but you get the impression that the high-energy Italian won’t stand for any kind of lack of effort from his stars.
Conte will need plenty of work from his charges, especially with some selection worries ahead of this clash. Victor Moses misses out here after his red in the FA Cup final, while Eden Hazard is injured for the opening few weeks of the season.
We think that the selection problems work out pretty well for Conte, as he might be forced in to picking a very balanced side. Tiemoue Bakayoko misses out, so Cesc Fabregas comes in, while Pedro and Willian will be part of the front three. That attacking line up has three central defenders to cover, along with the conservative Cesar Azpilicueta at right-wing back. The Spaniard is more likely to step in to a defensive midfield position than bomb on like Moses.
Given that N’Golo Kante is in the mix too, the Blues should have enough cover to keep Arsenal quiet. However, we can’t see them pouring forward, especially with Alvaro Morata needing minutes to get up to scratch. We think this is a narrow win for the champions, so we’re backing a Chelsea win at 23/20 with BetVictor. We’re also going for a 1-0 win, given how many bodies the Blues have to keep Alexandre Lacazette quiet. A 1-0 victory seems like great value at 8/1 with Betfred, and it’s a result that Conte would be happy to take.
