Sport for the day – who will win Euro 2012?
England. Nailed on.
Well, perhaps. We are hoping not to get sucked into the inevitable fervour for England to go all the way (yes, even with Roy in charge). Every time a tournament rolls around our minds get warped from the sensible view that England have a fair chance of getting out of their group, but no chance of winning. Instead the logic gets devoured by hopes and dreams that this could be our moment. No matter we have perhaps two world class players (and one of those is a goalkeeper). We always get sucked in. Well, not this time. And just to make sure we’re going to be backing Germany, so it won’t be all bad when they knock us out in the semis.
At present Die Mannschaft – despite their daft as hell nickname – look a reasonable price at 10/3 with Boylesports to lift the trophy. This compares to 11/4 for favourites Spain with bwin and a tempting 7/1 with bet365 for the Netherlands to go one better than they did in South Africa.
Of course, in the run up to the tournament, there is always that outside chance, that slight possibility that I read the wrong article, watch some nostalgic clips and get carried away all over again. If that’s the case, England look at steal at 13/1 with bwin. Well, you never know!
Here’s the squad Roy Hodgson has selected, so make your own mind up:
